The Urban Justice Center is an advocacy organization that works for and empowers New York City’s residents through a combination of direct legal service, systemic advocacy, community education and political organizing. Located in Manhattan, the current office houses over 100 employees and continues to grow apace with advocacy needs. This Brooklyn outpost in Industry City would house 3 of the Urban Justice Center’s valuable programs. Since the clientele visiting the center are seeking assistance during a vulnerable part of their lives, it was important for the space to diverge from the design of cold, conventional government offices. The final design treats smaller offices and classrooms as “floating boxes” that carve out space for larger programmatic elements.
Hoteling area provides visual privacy for employees without permanent desk space.
Space between conference rooms on the second floor provides space for a small lounge area.
Desks in the shared office space receive plenty of natural light from the windows at the corner of the building, while personal storage units between each desk provide a level of privacy. Flooring changes from concrete to carpeting work both a visual aid to denote work space, as well as an acoustic aid.
The Political Theater space on the first floor provides space for public events.
