This restroom prototype tackles the issue of access from both a disability standpoint, as well as the issue of access from a gender standpoint. By removing the standard of gender-segregated multi-stall restrooms with a single unit that meets the minimum ADA wheelchair accessibility guidelines, I was able to design a space that promotes equity without compromising on the dignity of the individual. After interviewing individuals with a variety of accessibility needs and researching current mobility equipment, I settled on a design that had grab bars on the front, back, and either side of the toilet. Continuing the grab bars around the restroom perimeter  as a design element both celebrates the grab bar and encourages independent use of the restroom by individuals that may have previously not been able to navigate without help. The hexagonal shape was chosen because it allows for a full 5’ turn radius for wheelchairs and walkers while still keeping the user in reach of the grab bars on all sides. The units tile easily and can be prefabricated and then clustered in any site.
